Why do people call it Australian Camp?

The real name of Australian Camp is actually “Thulo Kharka,” meaning big pasture. It used to be a seasonal herding place for buffalo and cow herders from the villages below Dhampus and others.

In the late 1980s, people from Austria came here and camped in this beautiful plain pasture. They started to visit this place regularly to watch the panoramic mountains of the region. For that reason, the locals named it Austrian Camp. But then, later, it became an Australian camp.

The Australian Camp Trek in Nepal is named after the many Austrian travelers who have frequented and enjoyed this trekking route. Over time, the name evolved due to pronunciation challenges among local Nepalese people. Originally called the “Austrian Camp,” it became known as the “Australian Camp” because it was easier for locals to pronounce. This linguistic adaptation reflects the influence of language and cultural interactions in shaping the names of places in diverse regions like Nepal.
