Why do people call it Ghorepani Poon Hill?
Ghorepani is a traditional Poon village in Myagdi District in the Dhaulagiri Zone, Gandaki Province. The name Ghorepani Poon Hill has its roots in the area’s historical significance as a trading route.
Ghorepani comes from the Nepali words “Ghore/Ghode,” meaning “horse,” and “Pani,” meaning “water.” This name reflects the village’s past as a vital stopover where traders would bring their horses to rest and hydrate while journeying through the region.
Poon Hill, on the other hand, is named after the Poon Magar ethnic community, who have been inhabitants of the area for generations. The hill not only carries the name of the local people but also serves as a testament to their enduring presence and cultural heritage in this part of Annapurna region.
