Upper Mustang Jeep Tour 5 Days Overview

This Lo Manthang trek offers a rare glimpse into an old Tibetan Buddhist kingdom in Nepal, even in a short five-day format. The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour 5 Days is the perfect option for travellers who want to experience this hidden kingdom without committing to a longer trekking itinerary. In just five days, you’ll journey from Pokhara through the dramatic Kali Gandaki Valley to the walled city of Lo Manthang, once the capital of an independent Buddhist kingdom. Along the way, you’ll pass through centuries-old villages, colorful canyons, and some of the most striking high-desert landscapes in the Himalayas. This page covers everything from the day-by-day Upper Mustang Trek itinerary to the current Upper Mustang Trek cost, so you can plan your journey with confidence.

Why This Upper Mustang Tour Is Done by Jeep, Not on Foot

Until a few years ago, Upper Mustang could only be reached on foot, and the classic walking route typically took around ten days. At that time, walking was the only way to explore Lo Manthang and the surrounding villages, since no motor road existed. However, a motor road now runs the same route, connecting Pokhara and Jomsom directly to Lo Manthang. As a result, walking alongside vehicle traffic on that same road no longer offers the quiet, immersive trekking experience it once did. For this reason, we now run this as the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour 5 Days instead of a walking trek, since trekkers enjoy trails free of motor roads the most. This approach lets you experience the same historic sites and landscapes in less time, without compromising on comfort or safety.

What Makes This a Short Upper Mustang Trek

This short Upper Mustang trek is a jeep-based journey rather than a walking trek, which makes it accessible to travellers with limited time or those who prefer a more relaxed pace. Over five days, you’ll drive through Kagbeni, Lo Manthang, and Marpha, taking in monasteries, royal palaces, and traditional Tibetan-style villages. Because the route stays largely on vehicle roads, this Lo Manthang trek suits families, older travellers, and anyone looking for a shorter alternative to the classic Upper Mustang Trek 11 Days. Even so, the cultural depth and scenic reward remain just as rich as the longer route. This Upper Mustang Trek itinerary keeps every essential stop — Kagbeni, Lo Manthang, and Marpha — while cutting the total trekking time in half

Likewise, if we come across other travellers interested in the same trek and dates, we’ll be glad to suggest the option to you as well. Personal Supplies (Packing List)

Since Upper Mustang sits in a high-altitude desert, temperatures can shift quickly between day and night. As a result, packing the right layers matters more than packing heavily. We recommend bringing:

  • A warm down jacket for cold mornings and evenings
  • Windproof and dust-proof outer layers, since the region is known for strong afternoon winds
  • Comfortable trekking shoes or boots, even though most of the route is vehicle-based
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for high-altitude UV exposure
  • A basic first-aid kit and any personal medication
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A camera, since the landscapes and monasteries are highly photogenic

I had the most amazing experience with Tibetan Encounter last April. I wanted to book a tour lastminute, and even though I was the only guest for that time slot, they arranged the tour for me. Thupten showed me around Tibetan monastries and villages, and told me so much about the Tibetan communities in Nepal that it dazzled me. He was very honest and straightforward, and I found his view on Buddhism very interesting. Also, it was an amazing experience to be able to talk to a buddhist monk, and try all kinds of Tibetan food. Highly recommended!

I did the “Morning Tour” which ment I got the full experience visiting two Tibetan villages. The guide was very knowledgeable and explained each stop in detail. Visiting the locations alone or with a large tour group would definitely not provide the full experience. On the day my tour was the Tibetan doctor was unable to reach Pokhara due to travel disruption. However the guide himself was able to explain the topic himself and answer all our questions so I didn’t feel as if I missed anything. He also invited the members of the tour group who were available to come back the next day to meet the doctor.

I did the full day tour in September this year. Mr Thupten is fully engaged with us on the tour. He asks that we hear him as he talks Of Tibetans that had to Leave Tibet, and of their lives now in Nepal. And that we put together Our own understanding of the situation. Office staff Samita and Alice got back to me promptly with questions I had.

I had a wonderful and meaningful experience with Thupten on the Tibetan Culture Tour. He is extremely knowledgeable about Tibetan culture and Buddhism, and explained beautifully how Tibetan traditions have been preserved while living in Nepal. One highlight was speaking with a young monk, which gave me a deeper perspective on Buddhist philosophy and how it can take many years of learning and practice to truly understand the teachings before sharing them with others. Thupten also explained Buddhist teachings in a simple and accessible way. The tour ended with a warm visit to a Tibetan family, where we enjoyed traditional snacks and drinks. Thank you, Thupten, for sharing your knowledge and helping me understand both Buddhist teachings and how Tibetan families continue to preserve their culture in Nepal. A truly insightful and memorable experience!
