Everest Base Camp Trek — 12-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu (1,324m) to Lukla (2,860m) by Flight — Trek to Phakding (2,651m)

Flight: 35 minutes | Trek: 3–4 hours

Your EBC Trek 12 Days adventure begins with an exhilarating flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Indeed, the scenic mountain flight itself is an unforgettable experience, offering stunning aerial views of the Himalayas. After landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, you will start your trek towards Phakding. Along the way, the trail follows the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, passing through charming Sherpa settlements and lush forests.

Consequently, by the time you reach Phakding, you will already feel the magic of the Khumbu region surrounding you. Overnight at a tea house in Phakding.

Day 2: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)

Approx. Trek: 5–6 hours

After a hearty breakfast, you will continue along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing it several times over dramatic suspension bridges. As you ascend, the trail gradually becomes steeper, building anticipation for the arrival at Namche Bazaar on this classic Khumbu Trek Nepal route.

Furthermore, along the way, you will be rewarded with your first spectacular views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse through the valley. Upon arrival, Namche Bazaar welcomes you with its lively atmosphere, colourful markets, and warm Sherpa hospitality.

Therefore, take some time to explore the town before settling in for the night. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 3: Namche Bazaar — Acclimatization Day

Short hike available

In order to safely continue your EBC Trek 12 Days, today is an important acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar, as acclimatization is essential on any Khumbu Trek Nepal adventure. Because your body needs time to adjust to the increasing altitude, resting here significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness. However, rather than staying completely still, a short hike to the nearby villages of Khunde or Khumjung is highly recommended. Not only does this help with acclimatization, but it also gives you a wonderful glimpse into traditional Sherpa village life. In addition, a visit to the Everest Photo Gallery and local museum is well worth the time.

Overnight again in Namche Bazaar.

Day 4: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,956m)

Approx. Trek: 5–6 hours

After breakfast, you will set off towards Tengboche, one of the most scenic stages of the entire Everest Base Camp Trek. Moreover, the trail passes through ancient rhododendron and juniper forests, crosses several suspension bridges, and rewards you with ever-expanding mountain views. As you approach Tengboche, the magnificent Tengboche Monastery comes dramatically into view against the backdrop of Ama Dablam and the Everest massif. Consequently, it is one of the most photographed moments on the entire EBC Trek. Overnight in Tengboche.

Day 5: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,380m)

Approx. Trek: 5 hours

Leaving Tengboche behind, today’s trail descends briefly before climbing steadily towards Dingboche. Along the way, you will follow the Imja Khola river valley, passing through scattered settlements and wide-open alpine terrain. Furthermore, as you enter Dingboche — the highest Sherpa settlement in this iconic Khumbu Trek Nepal corridor — the dramatic views of Ama Dablam become truly spectacular. In fact, many trekkers consider this the most stunning stage of their Nepal Himalayan Trek adventure. You will arrive in Dingboche in time for a relaxed afternoon. Overnight in Dingboche.

Day 6: Dingboche — Acclimatization Day

Short hike available

Once again, an acclimatization day is essential before continuing your ascent on this EBC Trek 12 Days.

Therefore, a short hike to the base of Nangkar Tshang Peak is strongly recommended. Not only does this hike offer extraordinary views of Mount Makalu and the surrounding peaks, but it also prepares your body for the higher altitudes ahead. The round trip takes approximately 3.5 to 5 hours, making it a rewarding and productive rest day. Overnight in Dingboche.

Day 7: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,938m)

Approx. Trek: 5–6 hours

Today, your EBC Trek continues with a gradual climb through the Pheriche Valley, where the Khumbu Trek Nepal trail transitions into dramatic alpine terrain. As you trek above the valley floor, the landscape transitions into dramatic alpine terrain, dotted with yak pastures and rugged moraines. Moreover, the ascent towards Thokla Pass is particularly challenging, yet the panoramic views of Nuptse, Lhotse, and several 7,000-metre peaks make every step worthwhile. After crossing the pass, you will descend to Lobuche, surrounded by raw and dramatic Himalayan scenery. Overnight in Lobuche.

Day 8: Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,160m) — Kala Patthar Trek(5,545m)

Apporx. Trek: 7 hours

This is undoubtedly the most exciting day of any Nepal Himalayan Trek, and a true highlight of the entire Everest Base Camp Trek. First, the trail leads over boulders and glacial terrain for approximately 3 hours to the small settlement of Gorak Shep.

After lunch, your Kala Patthar Trek begins as you ascend to 5,545 metres — the highest point of this EBC Trek. From here, the views of Mount Everest are simply unmatched anywhere else on the trek.

Furthermore, the golden light of sunset over Everest from Kala Patthar is a truly unforgettable sight. If weather conditions are unclear, the sunrise hike the following morning is equally breathtaking. Overnight in Gorak Shep.

Day 9: Gorak Shep — Everest Base Camp (5,364m) — Trek to Pheriche (4,371m)

Approx. Trek: 7–8 hours

If you did not complete the Kala Patthar Trek yesterday, you will do so this morning before breakfast. Today, you will finally reach the legendary Everest Base Camp — the culmination of your Nepal Himalayan Trek adventure.

After an early start, the trail crosses the Khumbu Glacier and leads to EBC, where mountaineers from around the world gather to prepare for their Everest summit attempts. Subsequently, after taking in this extraordinary milestone, you will begin your descent towards Pheriche. Along the way, the trail passes familiar landscapes that feel both comforting and nostalgic. Overnight in Pheriche.

Day 10: Pheriche to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)

Approx. Trek: 7 hours

After the high-altitude exhilaration of the past few days, your Khumbu Trek Nepal descent back to Namche Bazaar begins, marking the start of your return journey. Although the trail descends considerably, there are still some uphill sections to tackle along the way. Nevertheless, as the forests and greenery return, the air feels noticeably fresher and warmer. Moreover, once you arrive in Namche Bazaar, you can celebrate your successful EBC Trek with a well-deserved hot shower and a good meal. Tonight is also the perfect opportunity to connect with loved ones via Wi-Fi and share your incredible journey. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 11: Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860m)

Approx. Trek: 7 hours

On the penultimate day of your Everest Base Camp Trek, the trail descends steadily back towards Lukla. As you retrace your steps along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges and passing through Sherpa villages, the sense of accomplishment is deeply fulfilling. Upon arrival in Lukla, celebrate the completion of this remarkable EBC Trek 12 Days with your guide and fellow trekkers. Overnight in Lukla.

Day 12: Lukla to Kathmandu by Flight

Flight: 35–40 minutes

On the final morning of your EBC Trek 12 Days, you will board your flight back to Kathmandu. As the aircraft rises above the mountains, take one last look at the world’s highest peaks — a view that very few people in the world ever get to witness. After landing in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. Consequently, the rest of the day is yours to relax, reflect, and perhaps explore the city or shop for souvenirs. Q2: What is the best time to do the Everest Base Camp Trek?

The best seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek are March to May (spring) and September to December (autumn). During these windows, the Khumbu Trek Nepal route offers stable weather, clear skies, and outstanding mountain visibility — especially important for the Kala Patthar Trek summit, where you need clear conditions for the iconic Everest views.

The highest point on this EBC Trek 12 Days itinerary is Kala Patthar at 5,545 metres, which is actually higher than Everest Base Camp itself (5,364m). Previous high-altitude experience is helpful but not mandatory. What matters most is a reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness and a slow, steady pace. Throughout the Everest Base Camp Trek, you will stay in private tea houses — the traditional guesthouses of the Khumbu region. Altitude sickness is a real consideration on any high-altitude Nepal Himalayan Trek. However, the EBC Trek 12 Days itinerary is carefully paced with acclimatisation days and gradual altitude gain to minimise risk. Our guides carry an oximeter throughout the trek to continuously monitor your oxygen levels and overall health, ensuring your safety at every stage of the Khumbu Trek Nepal route.
