About Langtang National Park

Langtang National Park was established in 1976 as Nepal’s first Himalayan national park. It protects a stretch of the Langtang Range, along with its forests, glaciers, and rare wildlife such as red pandas and Himalayan tahr. A Langtang National Park Trek therefore takes you straight through this protected landscape — from the subtropical lower valley up to the high alpine pastures near Kyanjin Gompa. That range makes it one of the most ecologically diverse treks in Nepal. Because the park spans such a wide altitude range, a Langtang National Park Trek also means passing through several distinct climate zones in a single week, from warm forest to high alpine desert. As a result, every Langtang National Park Trek permit you carry is really a pass into one continuous, ever-changing landscape. Every Langtang National Park Trek with us is fully guided, permitted, and privately tailored to you.

Tea House Accommodation on the Langtang Trek

This is a classic tea house trek Nepal is famous for. You’ll stay in family-run mountain lodges each night, with a private room and hearty home-cooked meals included. A tea house trek Nepal-style means no camping gear to carry, and it’s also one of the best ways to meet local Tamang families along the trail. Hot showers are available at most tea houses for a small extra fee, and rooms get more basic — but no less welcoming — the higher you climb. That said, every tea house trek Nepal offers is different, and ours are chosen specifically for comfort and character along the Langtang route. Curious what you’ll be eating along the way? Our guide to Tibetan food covers many of the dishes you’ll find in tea houses throughout the region.

Tamang Culture & Heritage: Tamang Culture & Heritage Trail: Trek through traditional Tamang villages, pass ancient mani walls and colourful prayer flags, and experience a living Himalayan culture that has endured for centuries — with the option to extend onto the Tamang Heritage Trail itself.

Detailed Langtang Valley Trek Route Map

Your Day-to-Day Langtang Valley Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,460m) Drive Duration: Approx. 6–7 hours

Your Langtang Valley Trek adventure officially begins with a scenic overland drive from Kathmandu. As you leave the city behind, the road winds through terraced hillsides, rushing rivers, and small mountain villages. From here, you’ll reach Syabrubesi — the lively gateway town to Langtang National Park. Notably, this drive itself is a visual treat and a great introduction to the culture and landscapes ahead. Upon arrival, check into your tea house and rest in preparation for the days to come.

Day 2: Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2,470m) Trek Duration: Approx. 6–7 hours

First, your trekking journey begins in earnest as the trail follows the roaring Langtang River upstream through one of Nepal’s most dramatic gorges. Along the way, you will pass through dense subtropical forests filled with rhododendron, bamboo, and oak trees, as well as small local settlements. Furthermore, this section of the trail is rich with birdlife, so keep your camera ready. Despite its length, the trail is well-graded and gradually climbs to the welcome comforts of Lama Hotel.

Day 3: Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3,430m) Trek Duration: Approx. 6 hours

Next, as you continue ascending, the forest gradually opens up to reveal wider valley views and the first glimpses of snow-capped peaks. Consequently, the trail feels more and more like the high Himalayas with every step. Moreover, you will pass through several small Tamang settlements, each adorned with carved mani stones, prayer wheels, and fluttering lungta (prayer flags). You finally arrive at Langtang Village — a beautifully rebuilt traditional Tamang community that carries a deeply moving resilience after the devastating 2015 earthquake. This village is a powerful reminder of the strength and spirit of the Himalayan people.

Day 4: Trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m) Trek Duration: Approx. 3–4 hours

This short but scenic stage is the heart of the Kyanjin Gompa Trek: the valley opens dramatically as you walk through wide yak pastures with unobstructed views of Langtang Lirung towering overhead. Additionally, you’ll walk past a handful of scattered farmsteads and glacial streams before arriving at the remarkable Kyanjin Gompa. Specifically, this ancient Buddhist monastery is the cultural and spiritual centrepiece of the entire trek. Upon arrival, take the afternoon to explore the monastery, visit the famous local yak cheese factory, and soak in the extraordinary mountain panorama surrounding you.

Day 5: Acclimatisation & Hike to Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) or Tserko Ri (5,000m) Hike Duration: Approx. 4–6 hours

This acclimatisation day is what makes the Kyanjin Gompa Trek safe at altitude, and it’s also one of the most memorable highlights of the entire trip. Therefore, use the morning to choose your adventure. First, Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) is a shorter, more accessible option offering stunning panoramic views of the entire Langtang Valley, Langtang Lirung, and the Tibetan plateau — perfect for most trekkers. Alternatively, Tserko Ri (5,000m) is a more demanding but enormously rewarding climb with truly breathtaking 360-degree views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Range, and far into Tibet. Meanwhile, the afternoon is free to rest, explore Kyanjin Gompa further, or simply relax and absorb the serene high-altitude atmosphere.

Day 6: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (2,470m) Trek Duration: Approx. 6–7 hours

As you begin your descent, the valley gradually reveals new perspectives and angles that you may have missed on the way up. Consequently, the return journey through the forests and river gorge feels entirely fresh. Furthermore, the descent is generally easier on your lungs, though it can be demanding on the knees — so take a comfortable pace and enjoy the changing scenery. Specifically, the afternoon light on the forest and river is particularly beautiful during this stage.

Day 7: Trek from Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi (1,460m) Trek Duration: Approx. 5–6 hours

Finally, the last trekking day brings you back down to the warm valley floor through lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and the familiar sound of the Langtang River. Moreover, you will arrive at Syabrubesi with a great sense of accomplishment and plenty of wonderful memories. Celebrate with a warm meal at your tea house and reflect on an incredible week in the mountains.

Day 8: Drive from Syabrubesi back to Kathmandu Drive Duration: Approx. 6–7 hours

From here, the final leg of your Langtang Valley Trek itinerary is a scenic drive back to Kathmandu. Overall, this completes a full and deeply rewarding circuit through one of Nepal’s most beautiful and culturally rich trekking regions.

Please note that trekking durations, altitude, and daily walking times are approximate and may vary depending on individual pace, weather conditions, and route variations. Always consult with your trekking guide for the most accurate information and any necessary adjustments to the itinerary.

Extend Your Trip: The Tamang Heritage Trail

If you’d like to go further, the Tamang Heritage Trail can be added on to your Langtang Valley Trek itinerary. This lesser-known route winds through remote Tamang villages, hot springs, and traditional homestays west of Syabrubesi. It’s a great way to add a few days of deep cultural immersion before or after your main trek. The Tamang Heritage Trail was originally developed as a community tourism project. Trekking it directly supports the same Tamang villages you’ll pass through on the main Langtang route. Let us know if you’d like the Tamang Heritage Trail extension included in your custom itinerary — we can combine it with either the start or end of your Langtang Valley Trek.

Packing List: Preparing for Your Langtang Valley Trek

To ensure you handle this tea house trek Nepal comfortably, especially at higher elevations like Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri on your Kyanjin Gompa Trek, having the right gear is absolutely essential. In particular, temperatures at altitude can drop sharply at night even in spring and autumn, so layering is key.

Essential Clothing:

  • Down Jacket: Essential for cold mornings and evenings at Kyanjin Gompa and on your ridge hike
  • Hiking Boots: Waterproof, sturdy, and well broken-in before the trek
  • Base Layers: Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms
  • Trekking Trousers: Lightweight, quick-dry, and comfortable for long walking days
  • Outer Shell: A high-quality waterproof and windproof jacket for rain and wind

Accessories:

  • Personal Sleeping Bag (you can rent one, though many guests prefer their own)
  • Daypack (25–35L): To carry water, snacks, camera, and rain gear
  • Sun Protection: High-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and UV-protection sunglasses
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended, especially for the descent)

Health & Hygiene:

  • Personal Medication: Any regular medicines plus basics for headache, stomach upset, or altitude symptoms
  • Quick-Dry Towel: Compact and lightweight
  • Hand Sanitiser & Wet Wipes: Vital for staying fresh between tea houses
  • Blister Plasters: Crucial for long descent days on uneven terrain

A note on altitude: above 3,000m, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) becomes a real consideration, which is why we provide an oximeter throughout the trek to monitor your oxygen levels. Our guides check in regularly and will always prioritize a slower pace or descent over pushing ahead if symptoms appear. Staying well-hydrated and walking at a steady pace are the best ways to reduce your risk.

Frequently Asked Questions: Langtang Valley Trek

How difficult is the Langtang Valley Trek?

The Langtang Valley Trek is considered moderate in difficulty. While no technical climbing skills are required, you will be walking for 5–7 hours per day on mountain terrain. The optional ridge hikes to Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) and Tserko Ri (5,000m) are more physically demanding but well worth the effort. Overall, the trek is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to take it one step at a time.

What is the best time of year to trek the Langtang Valley?

The best seasons for the Langtang Valley Trek are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is stable, the skies are clear for mountain views, and the trails are in excellent condition. Additionally, spring brings spectacular rhododendron blooms along the lower trail sections.

Do I need a permit for the Langtang National Park Trek?

Yes, a permit is required for this trek. You will need the Langtang National Park entry permit to enter the region. As part of our private trekking service, we handle all permit logistics and documentation for you. That way, your Langtang Trek stays completely hassle-free.

Is it possible to customise this 8-day itinerary?

Yes — since all our treks are private, this itinerary is easy to customise. Together with our experienced guide, we can adjust the pace, add rest days, or shift the route to focus on areas that interest you most, as long as it’s feasible for the trek.

What kind of accommodation is available on the trek?

Every tea house trek Nepal itinerary with us includes traditional mountain lodges throughout, with a private room and hearty meals each night. While basic by city standards, they provide a wonderfully authentic Himalayan experience. Hot showers are available at most stops for a small additional fee.

Is the Langtang Valley Trek suitable for beginners?

Yes, the Langtang Valley Trek is suitable for beginners with a reasonable base level of fitness. The trail is well-established, the altitude gain is gradual, and our guides maintain a flexible pace throughout. Furthermore, the acclimatisation day at Kyanjin Gompa gives your body time to adjust safely before any high-altitude hiking. As long as you are prepared and take your time, first-time trekkers find this route both manageable and deeply rewarding.

Can I combine the Langtang Valley Trek with the Tamang Heritage Trail?

Yes — the Tamang Heritage Trail pairs naturally with the Langtang Valley Trek, since both routes start near Syabrubesi. Ask us about combining the Tamang Heritage Trail with your itinerary for an extended cultural journey through more remote Tamang villages. If you’re looking for something shorter, our Ghandruk Trek 3 Days or Mardi Himal Trek 7 Days are excellent lower-altitude alternatives closer to Pokhara.

How does the Langtang Trek compare to the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp?

The Langtang Valley Trek has one major logistical advantage: it’s only 6–7 hours by road from Kathmandu, with no domestic flight required. The Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp Trek both take longer to reach and involve more travel days overall, which makes Langtang a strong choice if your time in Nepal is limited. The maximum altitude on this trek is also lower, so acclimatisation is generally more straightforward.

We joined the full day Tibetan Cultural Tour after a recommendation from a fellow traveller. We had a brilliant time and it was genuinely so eye opening for us and such a valuable learning experience! Thupten is a fantastic guide and educator and we learnt so much about Tibetan history, culture, food and practices. It was like a full deep dive and course in a day with practical learnings from the monasteries, medical centre and refugee communities. Would highly recommend to anyone and such a different experience one will likely never have again!

Fantastic! I feel like I took an entire college class on Buddhism and Tibetan culture in one day! Mr. Thupten, the guide, LOVES what he does and it shows. He is a walking encyclopedia of so, so much in so many fields of Buddhism, Tibet, the Dalai Lama and Nepal. You learn so much about history, food, geopolitics, environmental factors, Buddhist teachings, and the life of a monk. The highlight was definitely sitting down and speaking with a young monk 1:1 for 30-45 minutes about his life history, way of life, belief systems and thought journey in life. A delicious lunch is served; one also gets to try butter tea (I liked it) and Tibetian bread and grains. You visit two different refugee encampment areas with their own monasteries and temples with a deep understanding of the histories behind them. This is definitely a must do while in Pokhara. It is certainly a multi-faceted deep dive that you will not regret presented by a fantastic guide.

One of the best experiences I’ve had in Nepal. The Tibetan Encounter is much more than a simple guided tour: it is a real immersion into Tibetan culture and the life of the Tibetan refugee community in Nepal. The guide has an incredible depth of knowledge and explains everything with genuine passion: Tibetan philosophy, religion, lifestyle, social organization, history, and the experience of Tibetan refugees in Nepal. You don’t just visit places — you really start to understand the culture and the people. At times, it almost feels like taking a small journey into Tibet. One of the most special parts of the experience was having the opportunity to meet and talk with a young monk who lives in the monastery, learning directly from him about monastic life and his daily routine. You also get to try traditional Tibetan butter tea and experience aspects of Tibetan culture that you would probably never discover on your own. What impressed me most was the quality and depth of the whole experience. Every question is answered, nothing feels rushed or scripted, and everything is explained with knowledge, passion and authenticity. I highly recommend The Tibetan Encounter to anyone who wants to truly understand Tibetan culture rather than simply visit a few monasteries. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Nepal.

We did the Full-Day Tibetan Cultural Tour with Thupten: it's a highly recommended experience, a must for anyone passing through Pokhara. Thupten gave us so much information and answered our thousand questions with passion and patience, even suggesting how to deepen our knowledge of Tibetan culture through books and culinary ideas we could look for even back in our own hometowns. He took us to the Tibetan settlements and told us the history of his people since the time of the diaspora. We learned how the Tibetan communities live here in Pokhara, and how the settlements are organized. We visited a Tibetan medicine doctor and were able to ask him a lot about the natural remedies he uses. We tasted typical dishes from Tibetan culinary tradition and also saw how carpets are made. What we enjoyed most out of all these experiences was delving into Buddhist philosophy, talking with the monks about their life in the monastery, and witnessing their prayers. Thupten was a passionate and knowledgeable guide, always ready to explain everything and a very good storyteller. He has a deep knowledge of Tibetan culture and Buddhist philosophy: to truly understand this culture, these mountains and this spirituality, spending the day with him was truly essential. Thank you so much!

I really enjoyed this tour and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the Tibetan community in Nepal. It was a very well-organized experience that offered a deeper understanding of Tibetan history, culture and daily life. Visiting the monasteries, talking to a young monk, learning about Buddhism, seeing a live sand mandala, trying traditional Tibetan food and hearing the stories behind the community made the day both interesting and meaningful. Thupten was very knowledgeable, friendly and happy to answer all my questions, which made the experience even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for something beyond the typical tourist attractions and want to better understand an important part of Nepal’s cultural diversity, this tour is a wonderful choice. Thank you for such an insightful and memorable day. Tashi Delek! 🥰🙏🏼
