Tibetan Encounter Pokhara is a cultural tour operator based in Pokhara, offering immersive day tours to explore Tibetan life, spirituality, and traditions. We specialize in local tours in Pokhara that connect visitors with real Tibetan communities, history, and culture.

Our tours are some of the most enriching cultural experiences Pokhara has to offer.

Learn more about Tibetan Encounter Pokhara and how we create meaningful cultural connections through authentic, guided experiences.

Founded by Mr. Thupten Gyatso, a Tibetan educator and tour guide, the initiative began as his personal journey to share authentic Tibetan stories. Today, it has become a powerful bridge connecting travellers with genuine Tibetan experiences.

As a result, this is not just a tour — it’s a window into a life few truly understand. Through these experiences, guests gain insight into Tibetan identity, Buddhist traditions, and the daily life of refugees living in Nepal.

Why We Started These Tours?

Over time, after working in tourism for nearly 20 years and meeting people from all over the world, I realized something important. Many had heard of Tibet, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, or Tibetan Buddhism — but very few truly understood our history, life in exile, or the deeper meanings of our traditions.

As a result, this inspired me to create these tours — a respectful space where visitors can connect, learn, and experience Tibetan life directly through stories, food, culture, and people.

What Makes About Tibetan Encounter Pokhara’s Cultural Tours Special?

Our tours go beyond sightseeing. Furthermore, they offer deep, personal interaction with the Tibetan refugee community.

This is what makes About Tibetan Encounter Pokhara a truly special travel experience for those who want to go deeper than surface-level tourism.

Guests seeking authentic experiences will find our local tours in Pokhara both enlightening and inspiring.

Tibetan Refugees in Nepal

Nepal is home to around 12–13 Tibetan refugee settlements, with a population of over 10,000 Tibetans. Historically, these communities were established after the 1959 Tibetan uprising and have since become strongholds of Tibetan identity, Tibetan language, and culture in exile.

As part of the experience, our tours include immersive visits to these settlements, where you’ll engage with the local community and experience daily life.

For instance, Tibetan children in Nepal grow up attending Tibetan schools and kindergartens located in every settlement. Education is almost free, thanks to support from the Central Tibetan Administration in exile and international friends.

A Trilingual Generation

As a result, Tibetan is compulsory to ensure that younger generations preserve their language and culture.
Alongside Tibetan, children also learn in English and Nepali, growing up fluent in all three languages.

Tibetan Education in Exile

Because of this strong foundation, the Tibetan exile education system has thrived. In fact, it has produced a literacy rate of over 90% — one of the highest among refugee communities worldwide.

A Legacy of Learning — Guided by His Holiness

Moreover, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has always emphasized that education is the backbone of our community. Thanks to his vision, he ensured that even in exile, we Tibetans grow up with the tools to succeed. At the same time, we stay rooted in our identity.

We are especially grateful to His Holiness for his lifelong dedication and unwavering commitment to providing quality modern education to all Tibetans in the diaspora. Without his vision and continued support, our success would not have been possible. We would not have become one of the most successful refugee communities in the world.

This is why we proudly say, “We integrate, but we do not assimilate” — a motto that reflects our ability to thrive in new environments without losing who we are.

We remain deeply grateful to His Holiness for his lifelong dedication to modern and value-based education.

Why Tibetan Culture of Compassion Matters

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has emphasized preserving Tibetan culture — calling it a culture of compassion. He explains the world’s challenges today are not from lack of an education & material wealth but from a lack of empathy, kindness, and human values. In contrast to material development, Tibetan culture — rooted in Buddhist philosophy — offers a vision of peace and compassion that resonates globally.

For example, to promote this vision, His Holiness initiated SEE Learning (Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning), now taught in over 50 countries. He stresses secular ethics — values beyond religion like compassion, forgiveness, mindfulness, and inner peace.

Additionally, if you’re interested in learning more, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has written several inspiring books on ethics, including Ethics for the New Millennium, Beyond Religion, and A Call for Revolution—accessible guides to cultivating moral values in daily life.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Four Commitments

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has dedicated his life to four main commitments. Specifically, they are as follows:

  1. Promoting Human Values
Encouraging compassion, kindness, forgiveness, and inner peace as essential values for individual happiness and global harmony.
  2. Promoting Religious Harmony
Advocating respect and understanding among all world religions, emphasizing unity despite different paths.
  3. Preserving Tibetan Culture and Identity
Working to protect and promote Tibet’s unique Buddhist culture, language, and traditions — especially in exile.
  4. Reviving Ancient Indian Wisdom
Sharing teachings on nonviolence, secular ethics, and mental training rooted in ancient Indian philosophy.

Ultimately, these commitments inspire and guide the vision behind Tibetan Encounter Day Tours — to share not only Tibetan culture, but the universal values of compassion and understanding.
