All our treks are private — designed for individuals, friends, and families rather than large fixed groups. Lower Mustang Trek 5 Days Highlights

In fact, this Lower Mustang Trek itinerary is a fascinating journey into the trans-Himalayan region, offering a blend of natural beauty and rich Tibetan-influenced culture. Along the way, the trek takes you through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world’s deepest, with breathtaking views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna ranges. Key highlights include visiting the ancient town of Kagbeni, the sacred Muktinath Temple, and exploring traditional Thakali villages. This makes the Muktinath Trek 5 Days route one of the most photographed corners of the region.

As you climb higher, the terrain shifts from lush greenery to arid desert landscapes, resembling Tibet. With moderate difficulty and easier accessibility, this trek is perfect for those seeking a cultural and scenic Himalayan experience in a short time. Every part of this Lower Mustang Trek itinerary is designed to fit comfortably within five days. It’s easy to see why so many travellers rank it among the best short treks in Nepal from Pokhara.

Getting to Jomsom: Flight or Drive?

There are two ways to reach Jomsom from Pokhara, and each suits a different kind of traveller. Understanding this Lower Mustang Trek itinerary in advance helps you choose the travel option that suits you best.

By Flight

  • Only 25 minutes, saving a full day of travel
  • Offers close-up aerial views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges
  • Flights are small aircraft and depart early morning, before winds pick up
  • Subject to weather delays or cancellations, especially in the afternoon or during unsettled seasons

By Road

  • Takes about 6 to 7 hours by jeep or private vehicle
  • More affordable than flying, and not affected by wind or visibility
  • Lets you see the Kali Gandaki valley gradually unfold, passing through Beni, Tatopani, and Ghasa
  • A longer, bumpier day, with less time left in Kagbeni afterward

Note: Jomsom flights are known to be weather-sensitive, and delays or cancellations are common, particularly when winds rise later in the day. If your flight cannot take off due to poor weather, we will arrange a private drive to Jomsom instead, so your trek is never at risk of being cancelled altogether. We recommend building one buffer day into your travel plans in case of flight disruption. Whichever way you travel to Jomsom, you’ll continue by jeep or taxi to Kagbeni, where the trek begins on foot.

Lower Mustang Trek 5 Days Itinerary & Route

Day 1: Fly Pokhara to Jomsom (2720m) & Drive to Kagbeni (2800m)

Kagbeni marks the official gateway to Upper Mustang, so this is your first taste of the restricted region’s atmosphere.

Duration: 25 minutes by flight, or approx. 6 to 7 hours by road
Duration: 45 min to 1 hour drive

First of all, your journey begins with a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. During the flight, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, creating a memorable start to your trek.

Alternatively, if you prefer to travel overland, you can reach Jomsom by road instead, a drive of about 6 to 7 hours along the Kali Gandaki riverbed. Specifically, this route passes through Beni, Tatopani, and Ghasa. Meanwhile, you get a closer look at the changing landscape as you gradually climb from Pokhara’s greenery into Mustang’s arid terrain.

Once you arrive, continue by jeep or taxi to Kagbeni, a traditional village known for its Tibetan culture and stunning landscape. Indeed, this is also the starting point for your trek to Muktinath from Jomsom over the coming days. As a result, this first day sets the stage for the full Muktinath Trek 5 Days experience that follows.

Guests who choose the flight option often arrive in Kagbeni with much of the afternoon still free, since flying saves most of a day compared to the road journey. If you’d like, you can use this extra time for an optional acclimatization hike to Muktinath and back to Kagbeni on the same day. Walking up to Muktinath a day early gives your body a head start on adjusting to the altitude, so when you return the following day for your overnight stay, acclimatization tends to feel noticeably easier.

Afterward, you’ll also visit Muktinath, revered for centuries by Hindus and Buddhists as a place of liberation and spiritual awakening, and a perfect spot for quiet reflection and photography, with panoramic views of the Himalayas. This stretch of the Lower Mustang Trek itinerary is the most demanding day of the trip, so pace yourself and take breaks to enjoy the views along the way.

Acclimatization & Altitude Safety

Even though this is a short trek, you’ll gain over 1,000 meters between Jomsom and Muktinath on your trek to Muktinath from Jomsom. We provide an oximeter to monitor your oxygen levels, and your guide will set a steady pace to help you acclimatize comfortably. Guests who took the optional same-day hike to Muktinath on Day 1 usually find this second ascent more comfortable, since their bodies have already had a first exposure to the altitude.

We joined the full day Tibetan Cultural Tour after a recommendation from a fellow traveller. We had a brilliant time and it was genuinely so eye opening for us and such a valuable learning experience! Thupten is a fantastic guide and educator and we learnt so much about Tibetan history, culture, food and practices. It was like a full deep dive and course in a day with practical learnings from the monasteries, medical centre and refugee communities. Would highly recommend to anyone and such a different experience one will likely never have again!

Fantastic! I feel like I took an entire college class on Buddhism and Tibetan culture in one day! Mr. Thupten, the guide, LOVES what he does and it shows. He is a walking encyclopedia of so, so much in so many fields of Buddhism, Tibet, the Dalai Lama and Nepal. You learn so much about history, food, geopolitics, environmental factors, Buddhist teachings, and the life of a monk. The highlight was definitely sitting down and speaking with a young monk 1:1 for 30-45 minutes about his life history, way of life, belief systems and thought journey in life. A delicious lunch is served; one also gets to try butter tea (I liked it) and Tibetian bread and grains. You visit two different refugee encampment areas with their own monasteries and temples with a deep understanding of the histories behind them. This is definitely a must do while in Pokhara. It is certainly a multi-faceted deep dive that you will not regret presented by a fantastic guide.

One of the best experiences I’ve had in Nepal. The Tibetan Encounter is much more than a simple guided tour: it is a real immersion into Tibetan culture and the life of the Tibetan refugee community in Nepal. The guide has an incredible depth of knowledge and explains everything with genuine passion: Tibetan philosophy, religion, lifestyle, social organization, history, and the experience of Tibetan refugees in Nepal. You don’t just visit places — you really start to understand the culture and the people. At times, it almost feels like taking a small journey into Tibet. One of the most special parts of the experience was having the opportunity to meet and talk with a young monk who lives in the monastery, learning directly from him about monastic life and his daily routine. You also get to try traditional Tibetan butter tea and experience aspects of Tibetan culture that you would probably never discover on your own. What impressed me most was the quality and depth of the whole experience. Every question is answered, nothing feels rushed or scripted, and everything is explained with knowledge, passion and authenticity. I highly recommend The Tibetan Encounter to anyone who wants to truly understand Tibetan culture rather than simply visit a few monasteries. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Nepal.

We did the Full-Day Tibetan Cultural Tour with Thupten: it's a highly recommended experience, a must for anyone passing through Pokhara. Thupten gave us so much information and answered our thousand questions with passion and patience, even suggesting how to deepen our knowledge of Tibetan culture through books and culinary ideas we could look for even back in our own hometowns. He took us to the Tibetan settlements and told us the history of his people since the time of the diaspora. We learned how the Tibetan communities live here in Pokhara, and how the settlements are organized. We visited a Tibetan medicine doctor and were able to ask him a lot about the natural remedies he uses. We tasted typical dishes from Tibetan culinary tradition and also saw how carpets are made. What we enjoyed most out of all these experiences was delving into Buddhist philosophy, talking with the monks about their life in the monastery, and witnessing their prayers. Thupten was a passionate and knowledgeable guide, always ready to explain everything and a very good storyteller. He has a deep knowledge of Tibetan culture and Buddhist philosophy: to truly understand this culture, these mountains and this spirituality, spending the day with him was truly essential. Thank you so much!

I really enjoyed this tour and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the Tibetan community in Nepal. It was a very well-organized experience that offered a deeper understanding of Tibetan history, culture and daily life. Visiting the monasteries, talking to a young monk, learning about Buddhism, seeing a live sand mandala, trying traditional Tibetan food and hearing the stories behind the community made the day both interesting and meaningful. Thupten was very knowledgeable, friendly and happy to answer all my questions, which made the experience even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for something beyond the typical tourist attractions and want to better understand an important part of Nepal’s cultural diversity, this tour is a wonderful choice. Thank you for such an insightful and memorable day. Tashi Delek! 🥰🙏🏼
