An introduction to Tibetan Opera

Tibetan Opera or Ace Lhamo (Sister Fairies) in Tibetan is an ancient art form that boasts a history of over 600 years. Some historians trace its roots further back to Tibet’s pre-Buddhist era, when Bon was the main religion, thus making Tibetan Opera one of the oldest forms of theatre in the world.

One of the most cited theories about the origin of Tibetan Opera involves a legend about a 14th century monk named Thang Tong Gyalpo. According to the story, Thang Tong Gyalpo, who was born in Shigatse county in Tibet, embarked on a fund-raising campaign in order to build a host of bridges across the country after seeing that many people were not able to reach their destinations due to their inability to cross rivers.

In an attempt to grab passers-by’s attention and to encourage people to donate, Thang Tong Gyalpo began to put on elaborate performances combining music, dance, drama and storytelling with the help of a dance troupe. The troupe included seven sisters from Lhoka county who would put on performances dressed in elaborate costumes and decked in beautiful ornaments. The performances were based on plays compiled by Padmasambhava. The monk himself provided the music, playing cymbals and drums, while the women danced. Spectators awed by the dancers’ beauty and grace began calling them Lhamo (fairies).

The stories told in Tibetan Opera are rooted in Buddhist teachings and generally recount the triumph of good over evil. An integral part of the Tibetan culture, the opera is still performed today by troupes in Nepal, India and Tibet and remains a popular cultural attraction. While some elements of the opera have been updated with time (such as addition of makeup and stage lights), the structure and essence of Tibetan Opera still remains close to the original.

Performances are usually divided into three parts beginning with a purification ritual followed by a narrator introducing the story and the characters through a rapid chanting of a set of verses. The second part is the opera itself where actors take to the stage and perform the segment.

This same process is repeated with each new segment. The final part features a blessing ceremony, and this is the stage where members of the troupe go around the audience passing a scarf to collect donations.

The music for Tibetan Opera traditionally consisted of drums and cymbals. Today performances can also include an orchestra. Costumes range from simple, plain clothes to elaborate, silk dresses depending on the persona the actor is portraying. One of the main highlights of the Tibetan Opera remains the masks which illustrate the rank of the persona wearing the mask. A red mask represents a king; a green, the queen, and a yellow mask represents lamas and deities.

While traditionally the operas were performed in public squares, today performances are held indoors as well on stages. The stage format can be either traditional or modern. Various accounts show that by the turn of the 19th century, there were several troupes throughout Tibet, with each major district having a permanent troupe performing for the local community at various formal occasions. Some notable troupes include Tashi Shoepa, Chongye Phundun, Shangpa, and Chungoa. Tibetan Opera is performed during important festival such as the New Year and the Shoton Festival.

Meaning of Losar Tibetan New Year

Losar Tibetan New Year is the most important annual festival in Tibetan culture, and many people are curious about how Losar is celebrated, including its deeper meaning, preparation, and spiritual practices. The word Losar comes from the Tibetan language — Lo means year and Sar means new — together meaning “New Year.” It marks the beginning of the Tibetan lunar calendar and symbolizes purification, renewal, gratitude, and fresh beginnings through long-established Losar traditions and rituals and the purification period known as Gutor before Losar.

Families and communities celebrate the Tibetan New Year festival with gatherings, spiritual rituals, monastery ceremonies, traditional foods, and cultural customs preserved across generations.

Losar is more than a calendar change — it represents spiritual renewal and emotional cleansing. People use this time to let go of negativity from the past year and welcome good fortune for the coming year. Families clean their homes, refresh altars, make offerings, and perform prayers.

Losar traditions and rituals reflect core Tibetan values: compassion, community harmony, respect for spiritual teachers, and connection with nature.

Why Losar Tibetan New Year Is Important

The Tibetan New Year festival symbolizes spiritual and personal renewal. Families perform purification rituals, make offerings, visit monasteries, and reconnect with relatives and communities. Losar traditions and rituals are deeply connected with Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Losar Tibetan New Year in Multicultural Nepal

Nepal is a multicultural country where many Himalayan communities celebrate Losar in their own ways. Besides Tibetans, ethnic groups such as Tamang, Hyolmo (Yolmo), Sherpa, and other Himalayan peoples observe their own Losar festivals.

The most commonly known forms include:

Gyalpo Losar — Tibetans celebrate it

Sonam Losar — Tamang communities celebrate it

Tamu Losar — Gurung communities celebrate it

While dates and specific customs may differ, the core themes are very similar: purification, offerings, family gatherings, festive foods, traditional dress, and community celebration. Connecting these traditions helps readers recognize Losar practices they may have already seen or experienced in Nepal. This shows how Tibetan New Year Losar connects with other Himalayan New Year festivals.

Gutor Before Losar Tibetan New Year

A key part of how Losar is celebrated is the purification period known as Gutor, observed two days before the new year. Gutor before Losar focuses on removing obstacles, illness, and negative influences from the past year.

Families clean their homes thoroughly and perform symbolic cleansing rituals for both the living space and the body.

Nyi Shu Gu: The Main Gutor Day

The first Gutor day, called Nyi Shu Gu, falls on the 29th day of the final month of the Tibetan year. On this day, people wash, clean, and prepare their homes to welcome the new year with freshness and clarity.

Guthuk: Symbolic New Year’s Soup Tradition

On Gutor evening, families prepare Guthuk, a special noodle soup made with meat, grains, and beans. Cooks add dough balls to the soup, and each one hides a symbolic ingredient, such as chili, salt, wool, or charcoal.

Each hidden item playfully represents a personality trait. When family members discover what is inside their dough ball, it often leads to laughter and lighthearted teasing — making this one of the most loved Losar customs.

Lyu and Drilue Ritual Practices

Another Gutor ritual includes creating a small dough effigy called a lyu, symbolizing negativity or misfortune. Each family member presses pieces of dough called drilue to leave a hand imprint.

Families later take these ritual objects away and discard them at a crossroads to symbolically cast away illness and bad luck.

Monastery Rituals and Cham Dances Before New Year

Monasteries conduct special prayers and ceremonies leading up to the Tibetan New Year festival. Monks perform extended rituals and sacred cham dances, which are spiritual masked dances meant to remove harmful influences and generate blessings for the coming year. Monastery rituals are an essential part of Losar Tibetan New Year traditions.

These ceremonies play an important role in Losar traditions and rituals across Tibetan Buddhist communities.

Losar New Year’s Eve Preparations at Home

On New Year’s Eve, families decorate their homes and prepare household altars. Offerings usually include:

chemar (roasted barley flour mixed with butter and sugar)

food and drink offerings

butter lamps

symbolic ritual items

Families can arrange altars in flexible ways, but the intention of respect and gratitude is central.

First Day of Losar Tibetan New Year Celebration

Tibetans consider the first day of Losar Tibetan New Year highly auspicious. People wake early, wear new clothes, make offerings, and pray at the altar.

Traditional foods include:

butter tea

khapse (fried pastries)

dresil (sweet rice with butter and raisins)

Families spend the day quietly, focusing on blessings and close relationships, and exchanging New Year greetings.

Second Day: Social Visits and Community Celebration

The second day is dedicated to visiting friends and relatives. Homes are open to guests, and people gather for meals, drinks, and conversation. Children receive gifts from elders, and hosts serve traditional beverages such as chang.

This day highlights the community aspect of how Losar is celebrated.

Third Day: Spiritual Visits and Prayer Flags

The third day is focused on spiritual connection. Many people visit monasteries and teachers and perform lhasang, an incense smoke offering made from fragrant herbs.

Families often replace old prayer flags with new ones, symbolizing renewed hope and positive intention for the year ahead.

Duration of Losar Celebrations

Traditionally, Losar celebrations extend for fifteen days in Tibet. In many diaspora and Himalayan communities, the main observances last three days, followed by pilgrimages and additional religious activities. The length of Losar Tibetan New Year celebrations can vary by region.

Whether celebrated as Gyalpo Losar, Sonam Losar, or other regional forms, the shared message remains the same — renewal, gratitude, and cultural continuity.

What Is Tibetan Medicine (Sowa Rigpa)?

Tibetan Medicine — known as Sowa Rigpa, the “Science of Healing” — is one of the world’s oldest and most profound medical systems. With a history of over 2,000 years, it continues to thrive as a vital part of Tibetan culture and spirituality. Alongside Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, Sowa Rigpa is one of Asia’s three major traditional medical systems.

Q: What is Sowa Rigpa?

A: Sowa Rigpa is the ancient Tibetan system of healing, also called Tibetan medicine. It uses natural herbs, balanced diet, and spiritual practices to restore health.

The Tibetan medicine system, also known as Sowa Rigpa, is an ancient Tibetan healing system that integrates spiritual and physical practices. This traditional Tibetan healing system uses pulse diagnosis, herbal remedies, and lifestyle guidance to restore balance. In Nepal, this Tibetan medical system continues to thrive among Tibetan refugee communities.

Origins of the Tibetan Healing System

Rooted in Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan spiritual practices, Tibetan Medicine combines indigenous knowledge with ancient Indian and Chinese influences. The core teachings are based on a text called the Four Tantras (rGyud-bZhi), compiled by Yuthog Yonten Gonpo in the 8th century.

The Tibetan language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman group of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by over six million people, mainly residing in the Tibetan Autonomous Region and in parts of India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

The Tibetan language is generally divided into four main dialect groups. The Central dialect or the Lhasa dialect is the most commonly spoken dialect due to it being the basis for the Standard Tibetan language. Along with Chinese, it is also the official language of the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

The other dialects are: Kham dialect, Amdo dialect and Ladakhi dialect. As the name suggests these dialects are spoken by people from the regions of Kham in eastern Tibet, Amdo in the northeast part of Tibet and Ladakh in northern India. These languages share the same written scripts but pronunciations, vocabularies and grammars are different. It must be noted that even within these groups, there are further subdivisions.

The way the Tibetan language is spoken differs on the basis of the setting. In a formal setting, speakers will use “shey-sa” which is the polite, respectful speech, earlier used primarily by officials and aristocrats from Lhasa. The colloquial “phal-kay” is spoken in casual settings, between friends and family members who belong to the same age group.

The Tibetan language has a unique script which has its origins in India. Its present form has been in use since the 9th century. Tibetan scholar Thoemi Sambotta, who served as a minister under the reign of King Srongtsen Gampo, is credited with creating the Tibetan script.

According to legends, Thoemi Sambotta was sent to India by Srongtsen Gampo to study Buddhism. At the time, Buddhism hadn’t spread to Tibet, and Bon was the main religion of the country. In order to gather knowledge about Buddhism, Sambotta had to first study the art of writing. And it is in this process that Sambotta ended up creating the Tibetan script for the primary purpose of translating Buddhist texts into Tibetan.

The Tibetan alphabet that Sambotta created consists of 30 letters and four vowels and is considered to be ancestral to the alphabets of Limbu and Lepcha. Each consonant has an inherent vowel which can be suppressed or replaced with other vowels by using a variety of diacritical marks that can appear above or below the consonant. Syllables are separated by a dot.

In terms of writing the script, there are two forms. The first one, known as u-chen (meaning with head Tibetan), is used in formal writing and for printing purposes because of its clarity. The second form, known as ume (meaning without head in Tibetan), is essentially the cursive form of writing. It can further be divided into two forms: Drutsa and chuyig. Drutsa is an artistic form of Tibetan calligraphy that is used for official documents and titles whereas chuyig which means flowing script is used in day-to-day life for things like informal handwritten notes and personal letters.

Most Tibetan students grow up learning the ume script first and gradually advance to u-chen.

Some useful Tibetan phrases:

Hello Tashi Delek

Tashi Delek: It is a common greeting meaning hello. Actually it is difficult and perhaps impossible to translate properly in English. Tashi, means auspicious and Delek, means fine or well. On the other hand, it means, “may many auspicious signs come to you’. “Tashi Delek” also means “Good Luck”. Or ” Cheers” in Bhutanses Language.

If there’s one word that best defines Tibetan food, it is: hearty. The cuisine is rich, often heavy, but always deeply satisfying. Tibetan dishes are primarily made up of meat, grains and dairy, a result of its geography where fresh vegetables and herbs are scarce. Despite a limited list of ingredients, Tibetan cuisine has a diverse range of dishes ranging from stews and noodle soups to dumplings and dry meat.

Here, we list 5 quintessential Tibetan dishes.

Tsampa

Tsampa is a staple throughout Tibet and across the world where Tibetan refugees have built homes. The roasted barley flour is versatile in its use and is eaten both for breakfast and dinner. For breakfast, tsampa is traditionally eaten with a cup of butter tea. You can also choose to add a dollop or two of butter and a spoonful of sugar to give it a creamy and sweetened taste. Think of Tsampa as a Tibetan cereal, but only healthier and much more nutritious than your average box cereal. It can also be eaten as a dinner dish. Tsamthuk or tsampa soup is a popular dish made by mixing tsampa into a bone broth and adding minced meat for additional flavors. You can also make a vegetarian version by using rich vegetable broth.

Thenthuk

Thenthuk in Tibetan translates to hand-pulled noodle soup. It’s a perfect dish for those frosty winter evenings. A slurp of thenthuk is all it takes to warm you up. The main ingredients are wheat flour dough, meat and vegetables. The choice of meat used in the noodle soup depends on the location. For instance, in Nepal, where beef is not generally eaten, you’ll find that Tibetans in Nepal usually prepare buff thenthuk. Although traditionally a meat dish, you will find that restaurants today serve vegetarian version given the fact that more people in the Tibetan Buddhist community are adopting vegetarianism.

Gyuma

Tibetan blood sausages. A purplish-black sausage made out of a mixture of ground beef or yak meat, blood, salt and rice encased in intestine. Some like it steamed, others prefer it fried with onions and chilli peppers. Either way, it’s delicious.

Momo

Momos or Tibetan dumplings are perhaps the most famous export of the Tibetan people to the world. Traditionally, momos are made of wheat flour, minced meat mixed with chives and seasoned with salt and oil. As Tibetan refugees settled down in Nepal, and momos transcended borders, it slowly became a part of local cuisine. Momos, today, are as much a Nepali food as Tibetan. Contrary to Tibetan dumplings, Nepali momos typically are more spicy due to addition of masala in the minced meat mixture. The filling is encased in either round or moon-shaped wheat cases which are then steamed in a steamer. Vegetarians, fret not! There are also different varieties of vegetarian momos available, the most popular being dumplings made with potato and cheese mixture.

Sha-Kampo

The Tibetan dried meat is a ubiquitous presence in a spread during festivals, most particularly during Losar, the Tibetan New Year. Cut into long strips, the meat is air dried months before the festival. It’s often eaten as a standalone dish with butter tea or added to noodles and curries.

Where to eat Tibetan food in Pokhara?

It’s often a challenge to zero down on a restaurant when travelling to a new place, especially if you are looking to try a cuisine that is strange and unfamiliar to you. We, at Tibetan Encounters, believe that there’s no better way to dive into a cuisine than to eat at the home of a local family.
